Tenderness

£1,000.00

Emotional Hoops is a series of ten pieces in varying sizes, each one exploring the world of crewel embroidery through the very different language of glass.

I've always been drawn to embroidery — to the rhythm of it, the patience, the way texture and colour build slowly into something rich and alive. These pieces began as an attempt to understand that through my own medium: to find in glass something of the same tactile pleasure, the same quiet intensity.

This is the most quietly powerful piece in the series.

The palette is green — the colour of growth, of persistence, of life continuing — interrupted by a single sliver of semi-transparent white that cuts through the composition like a fault line, or a scar, or a shaft of unexpected light. It is a small thing that changes everything.

Notes of yellow and pink move through the foliate forms with characteristic warmth, but here they feel less like celebration and more like consolation — colour doing what words sometimes cannot.

The idea at the heart of Tenderness is one that anyone who has lived long enough will recognise: that growth does not only happen in easy conditions. That some of the most vital and beautiful things find their way up through difficulty, through loss, through the broken places.

The embroidery tradition understands this too — the mended textile, the darned cloth, the stitch that holds something together that might otherwise have come apart.

Tenderness holds that truth gently, and with great care.

Painted, enamelled and stained handmade flashed glass, polished and patinated steel hoop ready to hang. 30cm Diameter
